A New Assignment

At the start of each New Year I listen for encouragement, direction, and my specific assignment for the year. In the first few days of this New Year I got clear direction and even the theme for the New Year. The assignment and theme I received for 2012 is the theme of: child’s play!

I was asked the question by the upstairs team, “Will you be my childlike eyes?” I took that to mean, would I be open to see things from a child’s perspective. When I think about what it takes to overcome and process through transition, I would say without a doubt it takes childlike eagerness and willingness to see things from a new perspective. Processing through transition is on going and sometimes after difficult seasons we need help restoring our ability to hope and see things through the eyes of wonder. We would do well to take some pointers from a child’s perspective.

Although this theme might seem frivolous to you, I have found that I get my best work done when I work from the place of a curiosity, openness and a child’s perspective.

Look at some of the attributes of childlikeness:

  • Energy
  • The ease of risk taking
  • Ability to think outside the box
  • Fun
  • Time flies
  • Endless possibilities
  • New innovation and inventions
  • Unlimited creativity
  • No pressure, stress, or worry
  • Doing what you love in a playful manner
  • Hanging out with fun, enjoyable people
  • Color, no dull greys or blacks
  • Casual wear
  • Casual non-stuffy environment
  • Uninhibited
  • Plenty of laughter
  • Finger food!

I’ve decided to enjoy life as if it were finger food. That means giving myself permission to get my hands dirty and my face sloppy!

My assignment is to take each day and look at it through a child’s eyes; to get my hands dirty with lots of creative ventures and to be open to innovation and new possibilities.

As in past seasons, when I lean into childlikeness I open the way for things beyond my imagining. My life has been built upon this foundation. It serves no one when we live from a place of resistance, stuffiness or calculated –pride.

If you are ready to throw off some dead weight, lighten your countenance and renew your joy, join me this year in viewing life from the realm of child’s play. You may find that you have a heck of a good time, uncover new dreams, passion and strategies in the process!
